Boudoir Photography Lighting

Boudoir photography can be amazing once you have the perfect pose, the proper outfit and the best studio lighting. Having said that, you could have the best photographic equipment in the world and you would still not end up with a good quality photograph if lighting is not considered. Boudoir photography, like any other genre of photography needs excellently planned lighting.

Boudoir photographers have realized that their camera is only one of the things you need to have great photograph. It's really simple and I do want to emphasize this clearly: Where you don't have good, well planned light, you will not have a good photograph.

Surely you have come across some female friends showing of their boudoir photographs and they just seem washed out and disappointing? The poses are great and the outfits may be spectacular but sadly the photo lacks the wow factor... This is because the boudoir photographer have not considered proper lighting.

A well lit photograph goes a long way. Even in today's digital wonderland with the good old Photoshop, it is very hard to turn a poor boudoir photograph into an amazing shot. When we do post production this fact is very obvious... A well lit photograph is taken and not much needs to be done to it to give it the wow factor.

The secret to getting that perfect picture is to take it correctly with the correct lighting. Always consider your boudoir models eyes and face first. Yes we know it's about making your client feel beautiful and show off her well dressed body, but don't forget to portray her beautiful eyes and get them properly lit as well.

Below are some sources of lighting that could be used in boudoir photography that will make your photos pop with beauty:

1. The Photographer's "Golden Hour"

Shortly after sunrise or an hour or so before sunset

This is because the orange color that is naturally produced at this time would give a spectacular color to your photo. Most cameras are capable of capturing this kind of light amazingly and it will make a rather large difference to any boudoir photo shoot. That amazing warm feeling you get when you look at a good photograph is generally due to this aspect that was added to it by the boudoir photographer.

2. Incorporate Sunlight if possible.

No matter how we try - it is not possible to find a substitute for natural sunlight.

It remains the best source of light if used correctly.

Play around with different angles in natural sunlight, use your flash as a fill in light together with natural sunlight. It is best employed in a setting where you have large windows and obviously because its a boudoir photo shoot, your subject may not be comfortable being outside during your photo shoot.

Make the most of the shadows created by sunlight, make use of reflectors to soften the harsh light in the subjects face if desired or use it as is to create a sexier more mysterious kind of look and feel.

Boudoir photography lighting is not about expensive equipment and phenomenal results can be achieved by being creative with what is available already. Look around where you will be doing the photo shoot, you will be surprised at what you can achieve by making use of the light source right there!
